Daniel Osen: From the Military Through Academic Life, and Onward to the Professional World

Daniel's interest in mental training sparked in 2013 during his involvement in the sports track and the football sports science program. It was then he encountered a brief mention of it in the 'Exercise Science' book. Additionally, he was provided with a memory stick by the Olympic Sports Committee, containing a range of mental training audio tracks covering relaxation, visualization, preparation, and managing tension levels leading up to competitions.

In 2015, during his tenure at the officer training school, Daniel was introduced to subjects such as psychology in operational leadership, pedagogy, and military leadership. This exposure provided a deeper understanding of psychology and performance psychology, laying a solid foundation for his future pursuits.

Whether it's building a doghouse or undertaking challenging physical trials, together we will find the solution for optimal performance.

Following these experiences, Daniel embarked on writing a book on motivational psychology. He delved into questions such as what drives most individuals and why some resist change while others embrace it. To ensure depth and accuracy, Daniel went beyond incorporating numerous doctoral theses, studies, and literature such as 'The Mental Training of Sports' and 'Organizational Psychology.' He recognized the importance of engaging directly with experts in the field. Daniel conducted interviews with notable figures including Sondre Risholm Liverød, Tor Åge Eikerappen, Gyrid Beck Solberg, Line Mari Thorkildsen, and Christian Ytterbøl, all proficient in psychology, performance psychology, and mental training. These conversations enriched his understanding and informed his writing process.

Simultaneously, Daniel pursued a Bachelor's degree in Preparedness and Crisis Management (2017-2020) at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Economics, and Management. This interdisciplinary program covered subjects such as crisis management, international crisis management, organizing for unforeseen events, crisis response, stress management, and coping mechanisms, among others. These topics intertwine with psychology, decision-making, and performance, forming a nexus that can be linked to motivation and mental training.

In 2021, Daniel self-published the book 'Motivation.' Building on this, in 2022, he commenced work on a new bachelor's thesis titled 'Mental Training in Emergency Services,' slated for publication in spring 2023. This thesis focuses on providing mental training techniques tailored for emergency services personnel who often encounter high-pressure situations requiring composure and swift decision-making. For these individuals, responding to emergencies is not a choice but a duty they willingly undertake.

From 2021 to 2022, Daniel coached two amateur athletes. In 2022, he took on an exciting new athlete, Sander Akeren (21), a golfer at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Sander boasts an impressive track record, having secured three Norwegian championships with Wang Toppidrett and named the best junior golfer in Norway in 2019. With six titles in the Srixon Tour, the highest level for a junior golfer, and a spot on the national team since 2016, Sander is a promising talent.

Daniel's coaching philosophy centres on consistency. He believes in the importance of regular mental training, with no shortcuts to proficiency. Drawing from the Olympic Top's model of basic mental techniques, Daniel provides a comprehensive package of exercises, techniques, and advice tailored for challenging situations.

Research

Through qualitative research with comparative analysis, I've delved into mental training by interviewing emergency services personnel and psychologists. The focus of my research is on stress and practical techniques to help individuals in high-pressure environments manage their emotions and thoughts, ultimately shaping their behaviour.

Combining this research with my studies at the Olympic Top Center Mid-Norway/NTNU, I'm equipped to offer scientifically backed advice and exercises that have proven efficacy. In cognitive behavioural therapy, establishing a strong rapport and fostering open dialogue with the athlete are paramount. Amidst the myriad methods in the realm of mental training, I prioritize building trust and fostering a strong athlete-coach alliance through meaningful conversations.

In 2023, Daniel enrolled in NTNU's 'Mental Training and Executive Brain Functions' program, spearheaded by a leading expert in sports psychology at the Olympic Top Center and the Department of Psychology in Trondheim.

Furthermore, Daniel has pursued additional courses in mental training under the guidance of Erik Bertrand Larsen, as well as Sport Psychology on Udemy, an online platform with collaborations with esteemed entities such as Nordea and Volkswagen.

"It's about listening and mapping the athlete's baseline to understand where the shoe pinches. Then, together, we'll figure out what measures we can take for you to perform optimally."
